ACTIVITIES:

Houtkapperspoort's exclusive Mountain Retreat cottages are centrally located to all the major tourist attractions and restaurants. There are hiking trails through bordering Cape Peninsula National Park (permit required), or you can walk through Cecelia Forest to the famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, which will be a brisk one and a half hour's walk. At the V & A Waterfront, which is approximately 30 minutes drive, you are spoilt for choice. Helicopter flights, scuba diving, deep sea & inshore fishing, sunset champagne cruises, schooner sailing, coastal cruises and luxury catamaran cruises are but only a few activities on offer. Visitors to the Two Oceans Aquarium will enjoy a fascinating underwater world. The boat to Robben Island leaves the Waterfront a few times during the day, and tickets can be purchased ahead of time.

Ratanga Junction (Seasonal) and Butterfly World (near Paarl) is a further drive of between 15 and 30 minutes from the Waterfront on the N1.

Simons Town is a half hour drive from Mountain Retreat. A popular must for children is to visit the Boulders Beach penguin colony where they can swim on a private beach with the penguins. Cape Point is a further 15 minutes drive from Simons Town.

If brave enough, another popular outing is a boat trip to False Bay where you can view sharks breaching, or we can arrange a Shark Cage Dive for you with Apex in Simons Town. Chris & Monique Fallows are well known Internationally for their love for and shark conservation efforts, and annually take the crews of National Geographic and the BBC to False Bay to monitor the sharks.

Hout Bay has a craft market every Sunday. A visit to the World of Birds in Hout Bay is not to be missed, and you can also do a boat trip to Seal Island from Hout Bay Harbor. If you are an avid surfer, Dungeons is a must. The spectacular drive along Chapman's Peak Drive to Noord Hoek Village which has a lot to offer for both adults and children, is about 15 minutes drive from Hout Bay. The village has some interesting shops, curios and restaurants. Kids are kept amused with treasure hunts, magic tricks and much more during the school holidays.

The Westlake, Royal Cape, Clovelly, Milnerton and Durbanville golf courses are between 15 minutes to one hour's drive from Houtkapperspoort. For the adventurous, experience flying in an Electric Lightning and other WW2 fighter planes at Thunder City, situated at the Cape Town International Airport.
